Visiting

Primrose Sands is a small, welcoming community in the Southern Beaches region, just 40 minutes from Hobart, 30 minutes from Hobart International Airport, and 20 minutes from Sorell.

Getting here

Primrose Sands is a short detour off the Arthur Highway, which connects Hobart to the Tasman Peninsula. Take Sugarloaf Road from the well signmarked intersection with the Arthur Highway, follow for 6 kilometres, then cross the bridge and turn onto Primrose Sands Road.

Alternatively, visit our neighbours in Dodges Ferry first by taking Old Forcett Road, following it for 5.6km, checking out Dodges Ferry’s cafes, restocking at the Hill Street Grocer, and then turning onto Carlton River Road. It will bring you out near the bridge again.

Did you know: Sugarloaf is an archaic name for a hill that resembles the cone shaped blocks sugar was once sold in?

Primrose Sands does not have a regular bus service. AreaConnect operates a trial courtesy bus on Tuesday and Thursdays for community members.

Accomodation

Primrose Sands RSL provides camping spots for self-contained campers & motorhomes. Primrose Sands has several B&Bs and AirBnBs, including

What to do

Primrose Sands is a great place to explore the entire South-East of Tasmania. Just 20 minutes to one of Tasmania’s oldest towns, Sorell, with vibrant local shops and historic architecture; 30 minutes to the Georgian village of Richmond, where you can find Australia’s second most photographed bridge (after the Sydney Harbour Bridge); or 46 minutes to the world famous Port Arthur Historic Site.

While you’re here, take a moment to visit even more local attractions too:

The kids can stay entertained at the Primrose Sands Community Center, which includes fenced playground, skate ramp and a dirt BMX track.

Primrose Sands Beach is a gorgeous sandy beach in a protected bay that overlooks the Isle of Caves and Frederick Henry Bay. Open to the public & dogs (dogs prohibited 10am-6pm, Dec – 1 March). If you’re lucky, the dolphins will be making a visit while you’re there.

Fishing is great here in the Southern Beaches. Check out TasFish’s guide to fishing in Frederick Henry Bay.

Primrose Sands Community Market is sometimes on at the local hall, bringing together all the local crafters and artisans. Keep an eye on the Primrose Sands Community Center page to find out when the next one is on.

Forcett Market hosts a monthly market, and regular themed market at the quaint weatherboard Forcett Community Hall. Watch their page for dates.
